The Alchemist Book - Review

The Alchemist - Paulo Coehlo

The Alchemist is one of the best books to read if you really want to know the real essence of reading. Yeah, there are many books out there which will give you goosebumps while reading but this one's different. The best thing about The Alchemist is it is a short read and an interesting read. Okay, enough of the praising part but let's jump into what the book is actually about? What makes the book so special? And what can we learn from this book?

Overview storyline

This book showcases the story of a boy named Santiago who is a Shepard and his only routine is to walk his sheeps and read a book every night before going to bed. Long story cut short, he gets a strange dream every night about a treasure located at Pyramids of Giza in Egypt and to interpret that dream he goes to a magical sorcerer who tells him that his dreams are true. He then sets out for the journey and meets an old wise man who tells him that he is finally going to meet his destiny. Santiago believes him and sets forth. Once arriving in Africa, he is robbed and all his money gone he decides to travel back but stays determined to remember the words of that old wise man. He joins as a worker at a Crystal shop and learns some life lessons. He continues his journey and sets towards Egypt and meets an Englishman on the way. He learns some Alchemy from him and the importance of reading. On the way to Egypt, they stop near an oasis where he finds love of his life, Fatima. After his courageous visions about upcoming battle and all, Santiago is given one of the highest positions on that oasis. But he refuses it and sets forth towards Pyramids. On the way, he meets The Alchemist who teaches him Alchemy along with some life lessons. Finally, after a long journey and beautiful experiences, he reaches the Pyramids only to find the treasure is missing.

My review of the book

This may seem that I have narrated all of the plot but I missed many things mentioned in the book. The life lessons we learn in this book are priceless and it acts as an instant motivator for people who are discouraged or dissatisfied. This book doesn't tell us about material treasure but tells us about our inner treasure. I have left the story incomplete but there is nothing to tell as you have guessed it as I have mentioned that this book doesn't deal with material treasure. This book is spiritual in a sense. From this book, we can learn what actually is life? What makes it important? Purpose of life? What is true love? And above all how important it is to listen to our soul.
