What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a state of mind where only essential things are retained and a careful thought is placed before acquiring new things. Minimalism can mean different to different people but nonetheless the core meaning remains the same i.e., to keep the essential things and throw the others which add no value to your life.
Minimalism as a practice
People who practice minimalism are called minimalists and each has his/her own guiding principles while implementing this practice. Contrary to popular belief where minimalism is viewed as stupidity as they portray it in different media, where one throws everything and lives the life of a monk, minimalism is just about retaining much needed things. It can range from anything that you like and count doesn't matter. You can have as many things you need with you the only thing is it should be important to you.
Does this thing has any rules?
No rules are present for the practice of minimalism. Minimalism is a subjective thing and people have different opinions on it. One person may use one music app to stream music while other may use three apps to do the same thing. It depends on that person's mindset. As many would think, minimalism is not rule based and it is quite simple to implement. What one person may think necessary may not serve value to the other, so stop searching for the meaning and start practicing.
How does it impact our life?
Actually, the impact minimalism has on our life is subjective. We cannot measure the satisfaction we associate with this practice through conventional language. Yeah this practice is effective because when you start to downsize things you give value to the things that matter to you the most giving you a free head space. It goes without saying that this practice will impact your life in a slow pace and there is no parameter to judge minimalism.
Does people practice it?
Yes, many people implement minimalism into their daily life and there are some internet celebrities who became famous simply demonstrating the importance of minimalism and these people include The Minimalists, Matt D'Avella, Maria Kondo, Joshua Becker etc.
Is this practice mainstream?
The mainstream practice of minimalism is subtle as many people don't quite express their opinions on this practice. But it is quite evident in some cultures. It is said that Zen Buddhism is all about minimalism and many Japanese people follow it. There are many groups encouraging minimalism by downsizing consumption of things making consumerism vanish into thin air.
Conclusion
Minimalism is often a confusing word but has a simple and straightforward purpose i.e., to eliminate unnecessary things and focus on only important stuff. We can be more conscious about the things we have and this helps us to focus on quality rather than quantity. It makes our life burden-free. Minimalism is nothing but a way of life.
